Workshop on Identifying Priorities on Science, Technology and Innovation for Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam

The workshop is part of an initiative by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to support CLTV countries develop a South and Triangular (SST) Collaboration Programme on science, technology and innovation (STI) . In this technical workshop of the co-creation process, participants from the senior and technical policy groups will work together to define common priorities for collaboration on science, technology and innovation (STI) for the sustainable and inclusive development of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam (CLTV).

STI have the potential to catalyse improvements in efficiency, effectiveness and impact of nearly all economic activities. By adopting and adapting existing knowledge and innovations, developing economies are capable of leap-frogging into more advanced techno-productive paradigms at a fraction of the time and cost that they would have needed to invest otherwise. Nonetheless, nurturing national STI capabilities requires long-term strategic investment, which can be challenging for CLTV countries as they are constrained, to different degrees, by limitations in institutional capacity and financial resources. Therefore, smart prioritisation is fundamental to optimise the allocation of resources and maximise the impact of STI for sustainable and inclusive development in CLTV.

Workshop objectives:

  • Meet and network with national and international policymakers and experts.
  • Explore in further detail the identified economic, social and environmental priorities.
  • Discover the potential of harnessing STI to address these socio-economic and environmental priorities.
  • Identify STI capacities required to harness STI to address these socio-economic and environmental priorities.
  • Select the specific STI capacities with the greatest potential to be enhanced by the South-South and Triangular Collaboration Programme on STI among CLTV.
