The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific - East and North East Asia Office (UNESCAP-ENEA) and the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) of the Republic of Korea are hosting a training workshop on science, technology and innovation (STI) policies for sustainable development, with a particular focus on developing STI policies for frontier technologies and public innovation. This training is prepared in partnership with the newly launched Asia Pacific Research and Training Network on STI Policy (ARTNET on STI Policy).

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development identifies STI as a key means of implementing the SDGs; this is also echoed in the UNESCAP Regional Roadmap for Implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific, emphasizing the importance of sharing experiences and capacity building on technology and innovation. In light of this, UNESCAP, STEPI and ARTNET on STI Policy support building the capacity of countries in the Asia-Pacific region to respond to the changing STI policy landscape, particularly with regards to a) the shift towards an integrated sustainable development approach to STI policy, b) the emergence of frontier technologies and the 4th Industrial Revolution, and c) innovations within the public sector to enhance policy making and service delivery.

The workshop will feature experts presenting key elements of STI policies, leveraging the experiences of countries in East and North-East Asia where STI policies have made contributions to sustainable development, based on the report ‘Evolution of Science, Technology and Innovation Policies for Sustainable Development: The Experience of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Singapore’.
