Promoting Gender Equality in the Technology Industry

The world is experiencing a rapid digital transformation. In view of the digital divide, the importance of diversity and inclusion is magnified in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In particular, the existing under-representation of women in the technology industry, which may marginalize women in the future of work, warrants special attention.

To ensure that no one is left behind in this emerging technological landscape, countries have to accelerate gender equality in the technology industry, especially for China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, which have a relatively high level of gender inequality in contrast to the advanced technological development.

In this regard, this meeting will discuss how national policies and company initiatives could accelerate the achievement of gender equality in the workplace of the technology industry, thereby contributing to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The publication “The Future is Equal: Gender Equality in the Technology Industry”, developed by ESCAP, in partnership with Korea Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, Center for Gender Equality of Nagoya University and Ladies Who Tech, will be launched at the meeting, providing useful references to member States in the region in advancing women’s rights and representation in the technology industry.
